PLaques
The original idea behind the TCS plaques was to bring attention to buildings of historical and/or architectural significance and the sites of various lost industries or occupations. All within the Conservation Area.
The process of producing each plaque is the same, firstly to identify the site then research the history and condense the facts to approximately 100 words. Next, permission from the site owner is sought and once given a Listed Building application is made (if necessary) then if permitted an order is placed, the text is sent to the manufacturers and we get a proof before we commission. Manufacture takes 3-4 weeks and then we use the services of a builder to erect them. The whole process takes several months.
When we first started this project a lot of research was done as to the style of plaque, what material to use etc. Maureen Turland of this Society designed a plaque style with a simplified TCS logo at the top with colours cream ground and black lettering. Other societies (Railway, Historical, Old Theocsbrian, Fair) liked what we had done so we developed several more in co-operation with them thus keeping a uniform style throughout the town. The plaques cost in the region of £600 each.
Here are pictures of the plaques so far installed:

Two more plaques have recently been erected, one for the Medieval row of houses in Church Street placed on the Crescent gable end and one for the Baptist Chapel placed on the St. Mary’s Road rear wall.
At the time of writing another is in plan, the Stocking Maker cottages in St. Mary’s Lane.
We are now looking at presenting an award for significant alteration, renovation to properties within the town. This could take the form of a small plaque and/or document to commemorate the work and to acknowledge the effort made by the owners, presented perhaps at a small ceremony?
