Talks
These regular talks are the principal way Society members socialise. They are open to non-members too and are a convenient way of introducing the Society to potential new members.
We plan to run one in each of nine months in any year on the second Thursday in the month, with the AGM and the Annual Trip in August and the Autumn Supper in November, leaving December clear. We make a small charge to cover the usual speaker fee/donation and room hire. Over the year we about break even.
We try to choose subjects for the talks that have some relationship to our role as a Society and to our locality.
During the pandemic we resorted to using Zoom to remotely run these talks, this proved very successful. However, now we are returning to a form of “normal” we will resume face to face meetings. Prior to the pandemic we ran these talks in the Elmbury Room at the Library, however that is being repurposed so we must find another venue. We have decided to try out the old Baptist Chapel off Church Street from June onwards, it has about the same capacity as our old venue whilst being better ventilated. It has good facilities including a small kitchen that may allow us to once again offer refreshments, and car parking is conveniently close.
To advertise our programme of talks we print it on our membership cards and for each talk we publish a poster that is displayed around the town and on Facebook.
