Talks
These regular talks are the principal way Society members socialise. They are open to non-members too and are a convenient way of introducing the Society to potential new members.
In normal times we run one in each of eight months in any year with the AGM, the Annual Trip and the Autumn Supper taking another three and having a clear December.
We try to choose subjects for the talks that have some relationship to our role as a Society and to our locality. They are held in the Elmbury Room at the Library in Sun Street usually on the second Thursday in the month. We make a small charge to cover the usual speaker fee and room hire. Over the year we about break even.
To advertise our programme of talks we print it on our membership cards and for each talk we publish a poster.
At the time of writing, we have the Pandemic with lock-down and social distancing so we decided early, before instructed, to cancel talks meetings for the remaining part of the programme. This avoided the dangers of virus transmission but also prevented any socialising and member contact, something of increasing concern to us.
Since then we have rearranged and augmented the Talks programme to use Zoom and those run have proved very successful.
